SKYTH — this name was born at the crossroads of two worlds. On one side, the Scythians, history's freest horseback warriors; on the other, Skynet, one of science fiction's most iconic artificial intelligences.
There is a hidden gem in the domain itself: the ancient Greeks called the Scythians Skythai (Σκύθαι). So skyth + .ai literally spells the original ancient name of the Scythians — completed, fittingly, by the extension of the artificial intelligence age.
The Golden Man
Unearthed in 1969–70 in the Issyk kurgan near Almaty, Kazakhstan, the Golden Man is a masterpiece of the Saka — the eastern branch of the Scythian world — dressed in roughly 4,000 pieces of worked gold. Every scale came from the hand of a master craftsman; its snow leopards, winged horses and birds carry the spirit of the steppe. It was the pinnacle of the metalwork of its age.
The Scythians surpassed the limits of their age on horseback. We will surpass ours on the back of artificial intelligence.
The Terminator's Warning
Skynet is the other side of the coin: the dystopian tale of machine intelligence out of control. But the real message of the saga is not despair — remember the line Kyle Reese carries from the future in the first film, "The future is not set," and the words Sarah Connor makes her creed in Terminator 2: "There is no fate but what we make for ourselves." We will write it.
